Goal to Brooklyn
Labor, Community Activist and Politicans call on Albany to build soccer stadium at Belmont
A new soccer stadium may be coming to Elmont and with it hundreds of jobs for the building and construction trades.
At a rally at the proposed site, trades members were joined by Senator Jack Martins and officials from the NY Cosmos to call on the Governor to approve the plan to build the stadium. The proposed location, a vacant parking lot at Belmont Racetrack, would provide not only a soccer stadium, but restaurants, a community center and a retail hub.
Labor leaders at the rally said that the stadium should create around 500 new jobs over the next 3 years as well as permanent jobs servicing the stadium, hotel and retail space. Most importantly, they said that the Cosmos from the beginning made a commitment to only use union labor to build out the space. The Cosmos have said that if they do not get approval for the stadium soon, they will drop the plan and move out of the area, potentially to Coney Island were Brooklyn elected officials are offering to build a new stadium.
