Remembering the "I AM" Sanitation Strike Campaign
50 years later, we remember Echol Cole and Robert Walker, whose deaths sparked the Memphis Sanitation Strike
Across the nation people are taking part in the I AM 2018 day of remembrance for Echol Cole and Robert Walker. Both men were killed on February 1st when they were crushed by their sanitation truck. Their deaths 50 years ago began the Memphis Sanitation Strike, a campaign that united labor unions and the civil rights movement and served as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last fight. Across the nation, moments of silence were held at 1 PM to remember Cole and Walker. Below is a video that AFSCME created to educate and remember these men.
