Below is a letter that we received from IBEW Local 3 Business Manager Chris Erikson asking for local unions help in ending their prolonged strike.  Find out what you can do to help.

Dear Brother and Sisters,

I am writing to bring you up to date on the labor dispute that the members of Local 3 IBEW is involved with Spectrum/ Charter Communications formerly Time Warner.

Approximately 1800 members mostly NYC residents and a majority that represents the diversity that is reflective of who we are as New Yorkers have been out on strike since March 15. For more than 40 years we have had good relations with Time Warner. As a result of fair collective bargaining our members have had good middle class jobs with good wages, medical coverage and a pension that has allowed for them to retire with dignity. The workforce negotiated and paid for those benefits contract after contract, the company agreed to those conditions of employment and in return had a highly skilled and productive workforce that made Time Warner the profitable and highly successful company that it was.

That all changed when the company was bought by Charter Communications. Unfortunately, the corporate agenda is to destroy the security of a defined benefit pension plan. That is their objective and the core of the dispute. Our members know the value of what it means to be able to afford to retire and are willing to fight to do it. They are not only fighting for themselves but for all workers who have been denied similar benefits or have had them taken away by profitable corporations for no other reason than greed. The CEO of this company made 99 million dollars last year.

I am respectfully asking for your support and the support of the members that you represent. Many are customers. Reach out to Spectrum and urge them to settle this dispute now. Union busting lowers the standards for all working men and women. They are intent on breaking the union and have employed scabs and out of town strikebreakers.

A disgrace in New York City for a profitable corporation that has the franchise to provide cable and internet service to New Yorkers. We deserve better.

This an urgent request for help. If you could, identify the Spectrum/ Charter Service centers in your area and join us in handbilling on Friday July 7th.  The New York State AFL-CIO is joining us in this effort as well.

Call Spectrum and let them know you want them to work out a fair contract with IBEW Local 3.  You can reach them by calling 1-800-892-4357 or click here to find your local Spectrum store.
