Only the rich deserve FiOS?
In 2006, New Jersey cut a deal with Verizon to bring FiOS service to some of its densest and most undeserved communities. Now 9 years later, two of NJ's biggest cities seem to be left out in the cold. While the initial plan called for Newark and Jersey City to receive FiOS, the mayors of those two cities say that Verizon has failed to deliver. Public records show that an unusually high number of multi-family units opted out of allowing FiOS into their building but critics say its because Verizon is exploiting the system by working directly with wealthy landlords to keep a building exclusive to cable and not FiOS. This way Verizon does not have to lay fiber optic lines to service one tenant in the building.
