Workers Independent News reports Calaveras California teachers strike, schools close as parents join teacher pickets
Calaveras California teachers are on strike. Late night talks failed to reach an agreement on a new labor contract for the teachers, who are affiliated with the California Teachers Association and the National Education Association.
The strike closed schools in the San Andreas area school district Thursday, Friday and Monday.
The teachers say they thought they had a deal until a school board member allegedly reneged on a verbal commitment to support the teachers’ settlement concept.
Teachers and parent supporters want the Calaveras school district to honor an independent fact-finder’s recommendations on class size reduction, salary raises of 4% in 2016-17 and 2.5% in 2017-18. and a joint safety committee.
The district won’t agree to the fact-finder’s report. Teachers say he district’s salary offer went from 0% to 2%.
