Do Videos Promote Participation?
Will UCOMM’s videography come in handy for this year’s Labor Day Parade?
September 7, 2019, is the day for this year’s Labor Day Parade, an occasion that brings unions from all over the tri-state area to march in honor of the working people of America. What makes this year unique is the fact that Liz Shuler, the Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO will be serving as the Grand Marshal of the parade, which will be led by Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). Historically, Local 3 IBEW has been able to have a turnout of around 8,000 members for the parade, but for this special occasion, they hope to have at least 10,000 Local 3 members turnout. A strong turnout is imperative for demonstrating the strength of the labor movement and providing leverage for negotiations. Considering the large size of Local 3, we hope that seeing the results of our work together will set an example for other locals to emulate. As UCOMM’s founder, Kris LaGrange, likes to say “As goes Local 3, so goes the American Labor Movement.”
With a goal as ambitious as this, it’s imperative that Local 3 IBEW engage the rank and file in every way possible. To do this, the UCOMM Media Group teamed up with Local 3 IBEW to get the word out. Beginning at the 2018 Labor Day Parade, UCOMM began collecting interviews with local union leaders and rank and file members. This footage was then used to create a promo commercial and a full promo video for the union. These videos highlighted the importance of coming out and the great time that members have at the parade and are being promoted online through the union's email, The Rank & File, and on their Facebook page. It is also prominently being featured on their website.
The message of the videos is simple: “Just Show Up.” With constant attacks on labor, it is now more important than ever to have your members show up. Even if it is for something fun like a Labor Day Parade, it is important that unions show their strength. Local 3 IBEW knows this and it is why they have invested in their communications. They've partnered with UCOMM to ensure that all of the membership is signed up for The Rank & File and the union’s text service. These practices and attitudes ensure that the tens of thousands of members hear the union message and know the importance of attending the Labor Day Parade in their Local 3 colors. Beyond Labor Day, these practices are what ensures that union members stay informed and active within their union. Even when there aren’t special events, having a democratic and robust union is well worth the investment.
