Why Donna Brazile at Fox News is Good
The pro's and con's of disgraced Dem leader in bed with the bad guys
On Monday, former Democratic National Committee chair and cable news talking head Donna Brazile announced that she has joined Fox News as a political commentator. The move comes after Brazile was unceremoniously fired by CNN in 2016 for leaking debate topics to Hillary Clinton.
The move is definitely a controversial one for the 59-year political veteran. Brazile has served in nearly every major role within the Democratic party, including having been the first African American woman to manage a Presidential campaign ( Al Gore), served twice as DNC chair and began working on Presidential campaigns in 1984.
In a statement, Brazile acknowledged that the decision to go to Fox may anger some of her liberal friends, but defended herself saying:
I know I’m going to get criticized from my friends in the progressive movement for being on Fox News,” Brazile acknowledged in a statement. My response is that, if we’ve learned anything from the 2016 election, it is that we can’t have a country where we don’t talk to those who disagree with our political views. There’s an audience on Fox News that doesn’t hear enough from Democrats. We have to engage that audience and show Americans of every stripe what we stand for rather than retreat into our ‘safe spaces’ where we simply agree with each other. For there is no safety in self-limiting numbers. You can be darn sure that I’m still going to be me on Fox News. I’m going to do what I always do: and dish it out straight, exactly as I see it, with just as much New Orleans hot sauce as folks expect.
Like everything in life, Brazile’s move to Fox News has some benefits. For too long the network has refused to put a strong, Democratic voice on the network. With Brazile on there, viewers get someone who is seasoned in the way cable news operates and someone who can push the party line. It is also important to have a strong Democratic voice on Fox News since polls have shown as high as 33% of their viewers identifying themselves as Democrats.
However, the Democratic Party and liberal activists have begun a concerted campaign to lessen the power that Fox News has. Recently, the Democratic National Committee announced that Fox News would be the only network that would be banned from hosting one of the Democratic Primary debates. Liberal groups have also pressured major companies to drop their sponsorship of the conservative network, with major companies like Pacific Life, Smile Direct Club, Indeed, Bowflex, and Minted having pulled their ads either completely from the network or from specific shows.
There is a mainstream media narrative that Brazile is damaged goods. After decades of doing good and important work for Democrats and oftentimes being the leading voice within the party for women and African Americans, she may have destroyed much of her good will. By leaking the debate questions, she fueled a false narrative that the DNC was out to get Senator Bernie Sanders. She also put CNN’s credibility at risk. No other network was going to hire her with so much baggage and this may be the real reason that she ended up at Fox News. Maybe she can help convince some Obama/Trump voters to come back to the party, but it’s more than likely that she sold her soul to Rupert Murdoch to become just another liberal punching bag on the network.
