How the White House is Destroying America
Factories are closing, good jobs are leaving and more mercury in our water!
The Trump Administration just keeps making more enemies and poor decisions. From factory growth slowing down, to the EPA, all the way to GM being sued, Trump’s policies are bad for business, bad for working people and bad for our country.
Factory growth is slowing down tremendously due to Donald Trump’s tariff policies which are causing conflict between the United States and China. The growth in China's manufacturing section has been stalled for the first time in over two years. The Institute for Supply Management, an association of purchasing managers, said on Thursday that its manufacturing index dropped to 54.1 in December. This was down from 59.3 in November and is at its lowest since November 2016. Basically, the higher the index, the better off we are. We are not better off at all.
Trump is also reshaping the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has now proposed a rule that will weaken limits on mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. They are loosening the company standards for many businesses on how to dispose of the coal ash, which is spilling into our waterways. This problem is not only changing the environment, but it also is affecting our community. Mercury can cause serious damage to a child or a fetus if they are exposed to it. They want to change how it weighs the costs by ignoring the health aspect it has on human beings. The coal industry is taking this as a win because Robert Murray, the CEO of Murray Energy, is a big Trump advocate, but as UCOMM has previously reported the coal industry is already dying as more and more power plants are being converted to cheaper and cleaner natural gas. The coal industry has never been worse.
The regulations on mercury being released by coal aren’t the only EPA regulation that Trump is going after. Over the last two years, he has blocked or attempted to repeal 80 Obama era environmental rules. This is affecting California farmworkers that are getting sick by the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos, which is still being sprayed because the Obama-era restrictions were put on hold. In West Virginia, polluted rivers and streams were to be cleaned and protected until the Obama-era restrictions were blocked as well by Trump. This is a public health mess due to the Trump administration.
While campaigning, Trump promised to bring good-paying, full-time factory jobs back to the United States, but over the last two years that has proven to be BS. The United Auto Workers (UAW) has announced that they will have to sue General Motors for violating their contract by using temporary workers instead of employing full-timers who were laid off from the factories. The lawsuit says GM has laid off about 1,000 workers who should be working at the plant over the temporary workers. This comes as GM has announced over 7,000 layoffs over the next year. In the 11 months since the so-called Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was enacted. The available data has shown that 500 corporations have used their tax cuts to repurchase stock rather than to create new jobs or invest in capital infrastructure.
With all this chaos taking place, the American people are distracted with headlines about walls and shutdowns. Jobs are leaving, pollution is increasing and there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel.
