If you have been listening to Trump’s press conferences recently, you may have heard him say that only losing 100,000 to 250,000 people to COVID-19 would be a good thing. However, this is really just more spin from Trump to make him look good when this is all over even though he failed to prepare for this pandemic and American's will lose their lives because of it.

As early as November 2019, governments knew about a possible outbreak of a coronavirus that we now know as COVID-19. Even earlier than that, going back to January of 2017, Trump was warned that the nation was not prepared for a pandemic. While Trump knew of these dire warnings, he failed to act. Even though he knew the national and state stockpiles didn’t have enough PPE or ventilators, he did nothing to build up the stock.

While COVID-19 was spreading across the United States, Trump also failed to act. Instead, he called it a Democratic hoax. At a February 26 news conference, Trump told the American people that the number of people infected in the United States is "going very substantially down, not up." Trump even bragged about the 15 cases at the time on US soil, claiming that "the 15, within a couple of days, is going to be down to close to zero." Just over a month later, on April 3, the United States has over 239,000 cases and 6,574 deaths.

This failure to take the situation seriously has led to many of these deaths. Without leadership at the top, there has been a state by state approach. Some states started testing early, some still don’t have mass testing. Some states issued stay-at-home orders to slow the spread, other states allowed Spring Break and Mardi Gras to happen. Trump’s failure to produce a national strategy has directly led to more deaths.

So why is Trump saying that losing a quarter of a million Americans to this disease would be a good job? Many think he is trying to lower expectations. This way if 100,000 people die, he can say look at what a good job I did, I saved 150,000 lives. To Trump, this is a political game. Lower expectations, place blame and attack the people who are bailing him out are all of the tactics that Trump is using to pull the wool over his supporter's eyes. Be aware of these tactics when you listen to Trump, because he is using it to convince 43% of Americans that he is doing a good job.
