Protests are raging in cities and towns across America to protest the murder of George Floyd. While most have stayed peaceful, some outside agitators have decided to co-opt the protests to commit violence.

While some of this violence is being carried out by anarchist groups, some is also being carried out by far-right groups as a way to delegitimize the Black Lives Matter movement. Some of these organizers have even posed as supporters to call rallies that will provide them cover for their lawless actions. It is important to keep an eye out as you see protests emerge on Facebook and Twitter. Just in the past few days, a few of these fake protests have been thwarted by community members.

In Bay Ridge, New York, one of these protests was called. According to NYC Councilmember Justin Brannan, the protest was called “well-known local demagogues” who were “advertising looting and violence.” Thankfully community members realized this and no one showed up to the rally. A similar rally was being proposed in Patchogue, New York, just blocks from where a man was murdered for being Hispanic. After the organizers were exposed by local activists, the rally was canceled.

Twitter is also reporting that White Supremacists groups are posing as Antifa to encourage violence. The fake account said “Tonight’s the night comrades," the group tweeted on Sunday. “Tonight we say ‘f--k the city’ and we move into residential areas... the white hoods... and we take what’s ours.” The account, which has since been suspended by Twitter, was traced back to Identity Evropa, a group that has been labeled as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Twitter also warned that they are seeing more of these fake accounts sprouting up over the last week.
