IBEW Members Raise $30K to Support Local 665 Father
After Randy Margraves attacked Larry Nassar in court last week, IBEW members came to his aid; money will be donated to sexual abuse victims charities
Following IBEW 665 member Randy Margraves outburst in court last week, when the IBEW brother attempted to take justice into his own hands against the USA Gymnastics coach who sexually abused his three daughters, IBEW members from across the country began donating to a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his legal defense fund.
In the immediate aftermath of the outburst, Margraves was arrested and held in contempt of court. Just a few hours later tens of thousands of dollars had already been raised, largely from IBEW members. When cooler heads prevailed he apologized to the court and the Judge decided to not charge him with any crimes.
Once he was let go, Margraves and IBEW 665 realized that the GoFundMe campaign had raised an astounding $31,311. Since he no longer needed this money for his legal defense he announced that he would reimburse anyone who wanted their money back, but any money still left on March 9th would be donated to local charities like Small Talk, RAVE, and the Firecracker Foundation. These local charities help sexual abuse survivors.
"At the time of the incident, I didn't know that the great brotherhood had done this, and I was overcome with gratitude when I found out," Margraves said in the statement. "I appreciate everyone stepping up to support me, but help is not needed for me. This situation has demonstrated the strength of the bond among our union brothers and sisters...we're glad to see the money going to organizations that help survivors of abuse.”
