Schumer to Host Comedy Fundraiser for Labor Candidate
Activist and comedian Amy Schumer will be hosting a show for a labor backed candidate who is key to the blue wave
There are just 2 weeks until Election Day and candidates across the country are holding their final canvasses, phone banks, and fundraisers. While much of the media’s focus has been on the most competitive races in the country, Liuba Grechen Shirley’s race against longtime Republican incumbent Peter King was thought to be out of reach, but after enormous grassroots support, a slew of union endorsements, some positive press, and out fundraising King for the second straight quarter, the 2nd Congressional District is now seen as competitive.
With all of the momentum in her favor, this weekend Grechen Shirley announced that women’s activist and comedian Amy Schumer will be hosting a comedy show fundraiser for her campaign on October 28th, from 7-9:00 PM at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Grechen Shirley said in a statement: “Amy Schumer isn’t just a brilliant comedian — she’s also a fierce activist. From protesting Kavanaugh in Washington, D.C., to campaigning for common-sense gun control, Amy puts it all on the line to demand more from our elected officials — and I’m proud she’s joining our grassroots campaign to flip Long Island blue."
King has consistently voted against union members in the district, having voted to take away health care from tens of thousands of constituents, voted to blacklist building trades members who were exposed to asbestos from future jobs, and voted to dismantle important health and safety regulations. King has an abysmal 41% lifetime rating from the AFL-CIO.
Tickets will be general admission and are $100. They can be purchased here, with all proceeds going to Grechen Shirley’s campaign. If you are not in the New York area and still want to help out Grechen Shirley’s campaign, you can click here to donate.
As UCOMM Blog previously reported, we must take back the Congress to ensure that we stop Trump and Kavanaugh’s attempt to pass a National Right to Work law. Blue collar, union-backed candidates will play an instrumental role in that. Here are some of the candidates from across the country who you should consider helping as well.
5th District: Jahna Hayes 2016 National Teacher of the Year and AFT member
2nd District: Jared Golden
1st District: Randy “Ironstache” Bryce a union ironworker with Ironworkers Local 8.
3rd District: Richard Ojeda
While these are the candidates that UCOMM has been focusing on, you can get a full list of labor friendly candidates from the AFL-CIO.
