On behalf of the officers at CWA Local 1104/GSEU, I would like to welcome you to the beginning of a new academic year. The year begins with a celebration on Monday, a holiday that organized labor invented called Labor Day. This Labor Day our Union celebrates a recent win. For the first time in ten years five people with a Democratic majority have been appointed to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The NLRB is responsible for investigating unfair labor practices and supervising union elections. We have our National/Local Union and all of our members to thank for making the calls to the US Senate to protect worker's rights with this recent NLRB victory.

Labor Day is the result of the labor movement, as is the 8 hour work day, minimum wage, social security, the family medical leave act, occupational safety and health, the end of child labor and the creation of public education and support of civil rights. To maintain these wins we all need to be involved and aware and continue to work together to protect our rights as workers. On Labor Day, we celebrate the theory and concept of organized labor, and take a day to reflect on all we have accomplished, and have dialog with family and friends on the challenges we face as working people and ways we can make our work lives better. Enjoy your Labor Day because as dues paying members, you are on the front line when it comes to protecting and preserving what so many before us have fought and sometimes died for. Be proud to be union.
