Local 1049 was among 44,000
On August 11th, on a beautiful summer's day in Philadelphia, PA, Local 1049 packed two buses and joined 44,000 union members from across the organized labor community for a massive demonstration. We sent a strong message, "don't take us for granted". The American Labor Movement demands that both Democrats and Republicans recognized our "Worker Bill of Rights" ! IBEW International President put this historic event together to ensure our voice is heard. President Hill invited the leaders of both parties, Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Reince Priebus who is Chair of the Republican National Committee to attend. The Republicans never showed up but DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz did and not only did she sign on to our bill of rights, she committed to make it part of the Democratic Platform at the Convention. Also in attendance was IBEW Third District VP Don Siegel, and the AFL-CIO's President Rich Trumka. You can watch Trumka's full speech on our website. Also President Barack Obama taped an inspirational message specifically to those in attendance at the rally.
