Arrested at the Car Wash!
On Wednesday, Restaurant, Wholesale and Department Store Workers Union (RWDSU) president Stuart Applebaum, United Food and Commercial Workers International President Marc Perrone, and NYC Councilmembers Carlos Menchaca and Brad Lander were arrested as part of a civil disobedience to stand up for car wash workers. Car wash workers at Vegas Auto Spa in Park Slope, voted last year to form a union and are currently suing Vegas Auto Spa over unpaid wages and stolen tips. The so called "Carwasheros" are mostly immigrants and have been unionizing workers at other car washes across the city. They have worked closely with RWDSU to ensure that workers are paid better wages, have set work schedules and do not have their tips stolen by management. So far 8 car washes in NYC have voted to unionize and join RWDSU.
