Boardwalk Strike in AC
Members of UNITE HERE Local 54 are preparing to strike, if billionaire investor Carl Ichan does not restore pension and healthcare benefits for workers at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City. After battling for months with Ichan, the workers have had enough. Last October, the casino was given the ability by a bankruptcy court to eliminate these benefits that the employees have worked for years to earn. Instead the casino wants to offer employees a 401k and a $2,000 health care credit to go towards the individual purchase of health insurance. Since the bankruptcy hearing, Ichan has begun the process of buying the casino. The members, which have already voted to authorize a strike, have begun training strike captains and have filled trailers full of supplies for a strike against the casino, including wheelchairs, garbage cans, tables and chairs, marching band drums, and an inflatable rat and generators. Atlantic City has not had a strike since 2004. Currently, the Taj Mahal is the only casino that will targeted during the strike. Both sides are waiting on an appeals court ruling on the benefits. Ichan has vowed that if he loses he will cut off financial support and close the casino.
