Al Jazeera America digital writers have voted to organize with the NewsGuild of New York, a division of the Communications Workers of America.  While Al Jazeera joins a wave of other online news groups that have voted to organize, this was the first one in which the company did not voluntarily recognize the union and instead forced a NLRB vote.

The company is currently challenging the right of 9 employees to join the union.  Employees said that they wanted to organize due to a lack of transparency and inconsistent management as key issues. They said that discrepancies in salaries, responsibilities and job performance evaluations threatened to “undermine our work and the harmony of our workplace.”  "This vote confirms what we already knew going into this process -- that we have overwhelming support in the newsroom for this union. Next we'll fight to make sure our union includes all of us, so we can get to work on our first contract." said Alex Newman, Assistant Multimedia Editor.
