US DOL takes on Child Labor
As part of its efforts to reduce and eliminate child labor, the department's Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) is working closely with Sen. Tom Harkin, Rep. Eliot Engel, business representatives and senior officials from Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana to address child labor in the chocolate and cocoa industry. "We are encouraged by the efforts being made to reduce child labor in the cocoa sector in West Africa," said a US DOL spokesperson. "We have seen important signs of progress in the past year. At the same time, substantial challenges remain if we are to reach our goal of a 70 percent reduction by 2020. Eliminating child labor remains one of ILAB's top priorities."
